HOW WE WORK
One Foster Child or Family at a Time Since 2005
For The Seventh Generation makes it easy for you to make a huge difference in the life of a metro Detroit-area foster child or family. Here's how we do it:
The FTSG Website
Our website is an online “matchmaking” system for people who want to help and foster children and families who need assistance. Detroit-area child welfare professionals use our website to make requests for specific goods or services for a single family or child. Community members also use our website – to offer goods or services ranging from tutoring and gently-used/new toddlers' clothing to household items and computers.
Then, an FTSG staff member “matches” the donor to the foster care worker – and from there to the foster child or family. Depending on the need and the donation, this can mean making an appointment to drop items off at our Help Closet, or it might mean helping arrange transportation so a foster child can make appointments with an individual who has volunteered their services.
Social Media Outreach
FTSG isn't just a passive matchmaker! We have a growing, thriving community of active supporters on Facebook and many other social media platforms and every week we reach out to these fantastic people with a special request we call the Weekly Wish List.
The FTSG Help Closet
In the Samaritan Center Annex at 11457 Shoemaker Street in Detroit, For The Seventh Generation's Help Closet is a free “department store” where Detroit-area child welfare workers and their clients can “shop” for a wide range of new/gently-used, donated items for the children and families in their care. At least twice a year, we also open the Help Closet directly to foster parents during “Family Days.”
The Help Closet's hours of operation are: Monday 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM; Tuesday 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM and by appointment.
Want to make a donation outside of our normal business hours? Contact Coordinator Sherryl Ausbrooks: email@example.com. Note: We accept only new and nearly-new items because “our” foster children deserve the best we can give them.
Holiday Bazaar - A Christmas Party for “Our” Foster Children
Every year, FTSG hosts a combination holiday party/“shopping” trip for foster children aged 12 and under and their foster parents. Santa stops by to help, and we have activities, treats, and a chance for each child to select a present for themselves and a present for someone they love.
Interested in volunteering for the Holiday Bazaar? Email us: firstname.lastname@example.org.
Bulk Donation Programs
Throughout the year we identify areas of need that will serve more than one or two children and with the help of grants and larger donations we can meet these needs. Throughout the year we deliver over 100 beds and cribs, over 200 warm winter coats and more than 50 suitcases to children and families in need.
